Run Austin Run Half Marathon

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Race CourseIt’s taken way too long to post about this race… so I’m going to put something (small) up rather then nothing at all.

The inaugural Run Austin Run Half Marathon was held on Oct 11, 2009. The event was just the right size… not too many people, but enough to support the required aid stations.

All in all, the event went pretty well. The morning brought dark skies and rain, which I enjoyed. Unfortunately, this scared away some of the aid-station volunteers and most of the finish-line vendors. But all this stuff is really just icing on the cake that is a fun run through Austin’s west side. The course support like road-blocks and medical tents were all in place, so a few missing volunteers is OK.

The minor issues are easily be attributed to the fact that it was the first time the event was being held. I have high hopes for next year’s event.

There are a few photos of me on the official race photographer’s website.

You know Spring is here when it’s the Annual GRR Shake Paddle and Roll Fest comes around. Rather then explain what it is, I think I’ll just let the photos do the talking this time.

Cap10k 2009

This weekend’s Capitol 10k was great: the weather was cool but sunny, parking went smoothly, and we even managed to start together this time. In the end, there were two big results:

  1. We both ran under 8 minute miles for the first time (7:53 and 7:57)
  2. Drew beat Gwen to the finish for the first time

This year we started closer to the front then we have in the past. I think this decision alone saved us 30 seconds worth of ducking and dodging around other people.

3M Half Marathon

Since we were woefully under prepared for it, Gwen and I toed the line for the 2009 3M Half Marathon this last weekend with modest goals. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a wedding in Mexico all came at the height of training. A recent injury to my sciatic nerve wasn’t boosting my confidence either. With all this in mind, I set my goal at “finish the course without crying like a little baby.”

Dog Toys

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

With all these running posts, I’ve fallen behind in my quota for posts about dogs…

Gracie and I were home alone a couple weeks ago, and didn’t really have much to do. For me, this means that I sit at my desk sorting through bills and trying to clean up what I can around the house. For Gracie, this means sitting in the sun in the back yard.

In a particular hour of this particular day I happened to notice that Gracie had come into the house several times and then shortly returned to the back yard. Normally I would assume that she was just trying to decide between cold hard floors and warm soft grass… but she seemed to be a little more deliberate than usual. I decided I needed to investigate the strange behavior.

As usual, Gracie welcomed me to the back yard with a smile and an exposed belly (ripe for petting):

However, if you look in the background, you’ll notice that Gracie has decided that most all of her inside toys really belonged outside… about 10 feet away… in a big pile…

I guess she figured that her toys needed to come outside and enjoy the sun and have a little tea party. And being the good mom that she is, she decided to let them enjoy their party by themselves, but close enough to provide any assistance if needed.
