Run Austin Run Half Marathon

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

Race CourseIt’s taken way too long to post about this race… so I’m going to put something (small) up rather then nothing at all.

The inaugural Run Austin Run Half Marathon was held on Oct 11, 2009. The event was just the right size… not too many people, but enough to support the required aid stations.

All in all, the event went pretty well. The morning brought dark skies and rain, which I enjoyed. Unfortunately, this scared away some of the aid-station volunteers and most of the finish-line vendors. But all this stuff is really just icing on the cake that is a fun run through Austin’s west side. The course support like road-blocks and medical tents were all in place, so a few missing volunteers is OK.

The minor issues are easily be attributed to the fact that it was the first time the event was being held. I have high hopes for next year’s event.

There are a few photos of me on the official race photographer’s website.

3M Half Marathon

Since we were woefully under prepared for it, Gwen and I toed the line for the 2009 3M Half Marathon this last weekend with modest goals. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a wedding in Mexico all came at the height of training. A recent injury to my sciatic nerve wasn’t boosting my confidence either. With all this in mind, I set my goal at “finish the course without crying like a little baby.”

Today we finished our first half marathon. That’s just cool to say. Not only did we finish, but we finished within 30 seconds of our goal time. It’s not very often that my performance is within 0.33% of my projection. I’d say that’s a successful run by (almost) any measure.

As advertised, the course was indeed very flat. Coming from our training in central Austin, the few minor hills that we did encounter were behind us before we even realized they were there. We also found that the course was really well supported compared to the 10K’s that we’ve done before. The water stations were busy, but long enough that we could just get our cups at the far end of the stations.

RnR San Antonio, here we come!

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

With 18 weeks to go, we’re officially starting our training program for the San Antonio Rock and Roll Half Marathon. Gwen and I flirted with a number of ‘official’ and ‘coached’ training programs, but none of them really seemed like good value for the money. (Of course, being graduate students, money has a lot more value than it used to…) So we’re left to come up with our own training plan. This is probably best anyhow since we can tailor it to our lives and our current routines. And while I hope it doesn’t happen, we can change it up if we get injured or something.

San Antonio Half-Marathon Signup

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Since we all know that goals are pretty much the only way to stay motivated sometimes, Gwen and I have signed up for the
Inaugural Rock ‘n Roll San Antonio Half-Marathon. It’s scheduled for November 16, 2008, so we have eight months to get ourselves shaped up for the race.
